Background
Jake Peterson was born to Narleen and Paul Peterson in Boston, Massachusetts on June 10th, 1965. Jake’s younger sister was born in 1967. The family went to Alaska for their vacation in November 1978. Jake would never return home from this vacation. The family had left for the trip on November 7th.
Disappearance
On November 8th, 1978 the Peterson family who were in Fairbanks, Alaska decided to take a hike in the woods. 13 year old Jake Peterson and his father Paul decided to go up further ahead while his sister and mother stayed behind. The family left for the hike around 4:30Pm. During some point on the hike Jake lost his binoculars and went searching for them. Paul saw him run down the trail the way they came. This was the last reported sighting since Jake’s mother and sister never saw him run past there direction. Paul informed law enforcement soon after they couldn’t find Jake. A search haulted the area and over 50 cops and 200 investigators and searchers were on the scene. The search ended only 5 days later and police told the family he was most likely killed by a bear. Both parents were ruled out as suspects and the case went cold.
Later developments
In December of 1998 over 20 years after Jake went missing. A convicted serial killer named James Arlson who was charged with 3 murders in the late 80s confessed to luring and murdering a boy in Alaska in the late 70s and told police an exact location. Arlson mentioned Fairbanks the same place where Jake Peterson who disappeared in 1978 was staying at. Arlson was charged with Jake’s murder in February of 1999 and ultimately confessed to the murder but Arlson claimed he didn’t remember where Jakes body was. Arlson died in 2000 from liver failure. Paul who was Jakes dad died in 2018 nearly 40 years after his son went missing. Paul was 98. Jakes mother is still alive and his sister still fights for him. Jake has been missing for 46 years but his mother claims “Even after all these years you except the worst and the best. But you live it at the best”. Jake would be 59 if he is still alive.
